As part of an AP Environmental Science assignment and an attempt to decrease waste, Mr. Valor’s 5th Period class has established SUSTAINABLE SNUGGLES, an effort to create blankets for cats and dogs in the animal shelters out of unwanted t-shirts.
Their group’s goal is to promote sustainability within the Diamond Bar community. As a class we have recognized the issue of the unsustainable use of clothing. Everybody has old t-shirts that either don’t fit them, are not to their liking, and/or ultimately, not used. With these factors in mind, it creates a massive issue of unsustainability. To manufacture one t-shirt takes up to 2,700 liters of freshwater. This is not environmentally healthy. Taking over 200 years to decompose, these textiles cause a decrease in biodiversity, pollute the environment, and use mass amounts of water. It is in the best interest for future generations that we as a species find ways to get the most use out of these t-shirts.
At the end of the project, the group plans to donate over 10 blankets which will not only save the animal shelter some money but will allow for a reduction in use of blankets. Additionally, they want to obtain about 100 shirts or other articles of clothing which will be needed to create theses blankets, resulting in no waste.
GROUP MEMBERS: Micheal Abdelnour, Habib Bawa, Nadine Bibal, Dante Bionki, Jalen Cheng, Jacob Choi, Yufei Cui, Edward Delano, Haley Fetchik, Ryan Hsu, Timothy Kang, David Kwon, Thomas Li, Vincent Li, Belle Liu, Tricia Ma, Katrina Mahfouz, Ryan Mao, Irvin Ramli, Kareena Sharma, Kenneth Shin, Carter Ung, Christopher Uy, Hilary Wang, Brandon Yee, Xuan Zhang, Charlie Wang
