Career Portfolio

Goals and Assignments
The goals for this unit are:
· To develop an understanding of the relationship between education and career planning.
· To refine your areas of interest and connect them to the world of work
· To utilize available resources on campus to access career information.
· To become aware of the skills necessary for particular careers.
· To continue to develop your awareness of your own interest, talents, and learning styles.

1. Visit the DBHS Career Center. Check out your career portfolio, begun in 9th grade World History.

2. Complete the Personality Mosaic. Tally your score on the answer sheet and then mark the totals in the areas below. Using the Personality Mosaic Types sheet, mark down which personality types dominate your answers. Next check the Sample Majors and Careers Related to Personality sheet to see what careers match your dominant personality types. Follow the directions at the top of the page and underline college majors that appeal to you.

3. Selecting the right post high school graduation institution to study in your field is very important. Some schools are better than others in preparing you for specific fields. You will use the sample career or major from #2 above to locate 4 schools where you can study for your chosen profession or in your chosen major. You will do this through Eureka, a post high school education research tool located in the Library. Two of the schools must be in California and cost less than 25,000 a year for tuition, books, and living expenses. Two can be anywhere in the world and have no cost limitations. With this information you will complete the College/Post-Secondary Training Costs Sheet.

4. Now that you have researched a field of study and chosen four schools where you might study for that profession, your next task is to create a resume about a character from literature. Read the Resume Instructions so that you understand what information is needed for a good resume. Complete the Resume Worksheet for this literary character and then transfer to Word, using the Resume Wizard found under New Documents, Other documents, Resume Wizard.

5. You will update your portfolio:
· Making sure that all personal information (i.e. address, hobbies/special interests) is complete.
· Update the columns for activities, positions held, and awards/honors.
· Check off the courses you are currently enrolled in and update the credits section.
· Mark off the UC/CSU Admissions classes that you have completed or are currently enrolled in. Update the inside cover by listing the classes you have taken or are currently enrolled in.
· Review the career information on the back cover of your portfolio. Update, if necessary, your career pathway and/or Occupations of Interest to reflect your current interests.

6. Place the following assignments in your career portfolio behind the 9th grade information currently in the file and return to your teacher. Your file will be returned to the Career Center. Remember you may visit and update this file at any time. You will also have opportunities to continue to update this file each year in English until you graduate.
