There is an emphasis on five themes, as adapted from the Unifying Concepts and Processes of the National Science Content Standards.  These themes are:

1. Systems, order, and organization;
2. Evidence, models, and explanation;
3. Change, constancy, and measurement;
4. Evolution and equilibrium; and
5. Form and function.

Emphasis on themes contributes to the big picture by focusing learning on connections among major ideas and concepts. The thematic approach contributes to students’ comprehension of fundamental chemistry processes, ability to integrate facts with concepts, and appreciation of how scientists work.
