To all parents of eleventh grade students, March 21, 2018
California’s academic standards are designed so students graduate college and career ready. One way we measure student progress is through the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments. Students across California in grades 3–8 and high school take these assessments each spring. These tests were created specifically to gauge each student’s performance in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science. These tests measure the skills called for by the academic standards, including the ability to write clearly, think critically, and solve problems.
In the Walnut Valley Unified School District, schools use this test data to help identify appropriate course offerings, determine student placement, and measure academic student progress. In addition, this data could be used for state and national rankings for our high schools. Our staff places a high importance on all eleventh grade students participating in the CAASPP assessments.
This year, eleventh grade students will take the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for ELA and mathematics from April 9th-April 13th.
Eleventh grade students receive an Early Assessment Program (EAP) readiness score by completing the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. Students must authorize the release of their CAASPP (i.e., Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment) results for each assessment to the CSU and CCC systems. Students who do not release their results at the end of the assessments may later submit a copy of their score report to the CSU and/or CCC in which they have enrolled.
To learn more about these tests, please visit CDE’s Test Score Guide Web site at http://www.testscoreguide.org/ca, which provides informative guides and test score descriptions as well as sample test items at different levels of difficulty.
Other resources include the Practice and Training Tests, which can be found on the CDE’s Smarter Balanced Practice and Training Tests Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp. Parents can experience the kinds of questions that students will encounter on the tests.
With the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments right around the corner, Diamond Bar High School would like to invite you to join us for a parent information night on Wednesday March 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the GOLDEN HORSESHOE (ROOM 501). This is a change of location. The information night will cover the aspects of state testing, how your student’s score impacts your student, how to support your student with the upcoming assessments, and how the assessment impacts our school’s state and national rankings.
As the parent or guardian, you have the option of excusing your child from any part of the CAASPP. If you would like to excuse your child from the test, you must submit your request in writing to your child’s school. (Education Code 60615). Your request will be granted. Please let the school know as soon as possible, so alternative arrangements can be made for your child.
If you have any questions regarding your child’s participation in statewide assessments, please contact Instructional Dean, Matt Brummett, at 909-594-1405, Ext. 33512 or [email protected]
Sincerely,
Reuben Jones
Principal
