Diamond Bar High senior Kenny Mathews is among the 18 member 2009 16U USA Baseball National Team competing in the IBAF ‘AA” youth World Championships August 15-23 in Taichung, Taiwan. Mathews is one of three left-handed pitchers named to the team.
Once the team was announced late Friday evening, players had about 24 hours to get packed, receive new gear, do a photo shoot with Upper Deck, have a workout, and get to the airport for a 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning flight to Taiwan!
Kenny is thrilled, excited and honored to be able to represent his country. It really means a lot to him, his mother Kelly Mathews said.
The USA Baseball 16U National Program includes the 16U Championships in Palm Beach County, FL and Peoria and Surprise, AZ, the 16U National Team Trials, and the 16U National Team which represents the United States of America each year in officially sanctioned international competition
Kenny played for Team Anderson 2011 in the 16U Championships West. He earned All League honors at Diamond Bar in 2009 after leading the league in ERA (2.30). He also lettered in basketball.
