Class of 2021 Students and Parents,

 

We hope you and your family are well.  During these challenging times, we remind you to keep things in perspective.  It is very easy to focus on things and how they will only affect your student, but we must all remember, EVERYONE, all students in our country are in the SAME situation.  We have to trust that the people in charge of our nation’s universities will act accordingly and appropriately to the nations’ pandemic.  The article from the University of California (UC) below is encouraging in regards to this topic. 

 

STUDENTS:  Your Grade Level Coordinators will continue to communicate with you via these GLC News and Notes Newsletter and via REMIND TEXT messaging.  Please tell your peers via social media etc. to read this information and ask your parents to also read this information.

 

THE NEXT FEW WEEKS:  As we discussed with you during our classroom visits prior to school being closed, we were planning to conduct lunchtime meetings in May to prepare everyone for the COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS.  With the latest news that we will not be returning to campus this school year, we will come up with an ALTERNATE process to communicate the COLLEGE APPLICATION process to you all.  DO NOT PANIC-We will make sure you have all the TOOLS necessary to move forward, starting this summer, with college essay writing and eventually the actual applications in late summer and fall.  WE HAVE YOUR BACK ON THIS PROCESS-PLEASE BE PATIENT as we prepare these materials to be presented to you in May.

University of California (UC) makes BIG Announcement about SAT/ACT Scores. The article below discusses issues affecting both current seniors (Class of 2020) as well as our (Class of 2021).

As measures to combat COVID-19 have closed schools, cancelled standardized tests and upended nearly every aspect of students’ education, students and their families are understandably worried about whether those changes will hurt their college prospects.
The University of California has taken steps to ensure that students can strive for and attain a world-class UC education, despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, March 31, the university announced that it has temporarily relaxed its admissions standards for both newly admitted students and prospective high school and community college students to account for changes in instruction methods, grading and administration of standardized tests.


UC campuses will provide maximum flexibility to students who need more time to meet registration, deposit and transcript deadlines. The university also expects to work with students to adjust financial aid packages if family financial circumstances have suddenly changed.

To serve students and their families during this crisis, UC has enacted the following temporary measures, which are explained in detail in an online FAQ. 

  • UC has temporarily suspended the letter grade requirement for A-G courses completed in spring 2020 for both prospective and admitted students. For transfer students, the university has relaxed the cap on Pass/No Pass courses eligible for transfer to enter UC as a junior.  
  • UC will suspend the standardized test requirement (SAT and ACT) for students applying for fall 2021 freshman admission. This modification is not intended as an admissions policy shift but is rather a temporary accommodation driven by the current extraordinary circumstances. 
  • The deadline for students to accept their admissions offers remains May 1 for freshmen and June 1 for transfer students. However, the university has asked campuses to provide maximum flexibility for students who request extensions. Students should contact campus admissions offices directly with these requests.  
  • UC will also provide flexibility to students and schools who are unable to submit transcripts by July 1. No student’s admission offer will be rescinded for missing the deadline.  
  • Despite changes to the format and content of AP exams this term, the university will continue to award credit for exams with scores of 3, 4 or 5.  

California State University (CSU) Announcements Affecting

(Class of 2020) and (Class of 2021)

The CSU has temporarily relaxed some undergraduate admissions standards for both newly admitted students and prospective students to account for changes in grading, instruction and administration of standardized tests.  CSU campuses are prepared to be as flexible as possible with students who need may need more time to meet intent to enroll, and transcript deadlines.

To serve students and their families during this time, the CSU has enacted the following temporary measures:

  1. The CSU will accept grades of "Credit" or "Pass" to satisfy "a-g" requirements completed during winter, spring or summer 2020 terms. All prior coursework must be graded and a grade of C- or better must be earned for the course to satisfy “a-g” requirements. Grades of credit/pass or no credit/non-passing will not be included in the calculation of high school GPA.
  2. Given the indefinite suspension of ACT/SAT examinations and the fact the state's Smarter Balanced test will not be administered this year to current high school juniors, the CSU is evaluating its admission process for entering first year students in 2021. The CSU is in consultation with its internal constituents, including its statewide academic senate and governing board, to determine the appropriate path forward for eligibility criteria for fall 2021 applicants. A final decision on how CSU will adapt its admissions process for the fall 2021 term will be made soon. At that time, the CSU will immediately communicate its decision publicly.
  3. The College Board has announced changes to the AP exam content and format for spring 2020. The CSU will honor all existing transferable credit articulation for spring 2020 AP exams on which scores of 3, 4, or 5 are earned.

Words of Wisdom-PARENTING-HOW TO MAKE HOME FEEL SAFE FOR KIDS:

 

KEEP YOUR SCHEDULES FRESH

  • When developing at-home schedules, try to alternate between activities kids enjoy (like playing or screen time) with less popular tasks (like chores or homework).
  • Variety helps kids focus and gives parents a break.
  • Remember, this also applies to your schedule: alternate between work and family time.
  • Don't forget to give yourself some “me time.”


FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE:
In this time, parents can manage anxiety (yours and your children’s) by remaining optimistic.

 

  • Remind the family that experts are working hard to contain the virus
  • Don’t dwell on hypothetical worst-case scenarios
  • Maintain agency over what you can control — meals, bedtime, homework, hugs.

 

USE ATTENTION TO MANAGE BEHAVIOR:
Kids will naturally crave attention while stuck at home all day. Parents can give attention thoughtfully to encourage good behavior:

  • Give generous praise for being flexible.
  • “Actively ignore" (don't acknowledge) minor problem behavior.
  • Use time together as a motivator: “We can play a game if you do your schoolwork while I take this call.”

Remind TEXT-MESSAGE System For PARENTS:

PARENTS-Please sign up for the new REMIND accounts to receive text-message communications directly from your GLC’s. The Class of 2021 had to switch to new accounts because the company, REMIND set new limitations and capped each class at 150 students per class.  If you received these TEXT MESSAGES in the past, you will have to RE-JOIN! 

We have made student groups and now we are making parent groups.  If you do sign up for this process, you will receive the same text messages your student will receive.  These messages will become more and more important as we near our senior year! 

 

Please make sure to sign up for the correct group so there is enough room for all who want to participate. Keep in mind, your student has already received information for their message groups.  The information below is for interested parents.  Here are the instructions for how to sign up for the parent groups:
