Brahmas Named Heroes For Tutoring Program

KNX Radio Names Brahmas Heroes During COVID-19 School Closure

Story By Heather Jordan

There are a lot of high-schoolers in Southern California who will be applying for college in the next year or so.

But, with distance learning underway, some students are worried they may fall behind and not score well on their SATs or other entrance exams.

That's where our KNX Heroes of the Week step in.

When the coronavirus forced Taha Daud and his classmates to study from home, an unexpected need was uncovered. A need for specialized tutors.

"People are going to be nervous because they are missing a lot of weeks to prepare for the AP tests," says Taha. "Some classes haven't finished teaching their material, so we knew that there would be a demand for people who need help [with] some subjects."

So, the junior from Diamond Bar High School teamed up with his buddies Derek Wang and Zayn Siddique. Together, they created an online tutoring program that covers an array of subjects.

"We have AP U.S. History, Calculus AB, Physics-C, Physics 1, AP Chemistry, AP Bio..." Taha lists off.

He says the three founding classmates gathered other qualified student instructors, and in just a few weeks, more than eighty students have signed-up for tutoring.

It was truly a team effort.

Taha's father, Feroz Merchhiya, says the young men utilized a gaming platform to set-up the online community.

"I am involved in technology, so I was absolutely delighted and proud that [they] took the initiative to do it," says Feroz, "in a constructive, productive way, and thought about other students."

Plus, there's a perk. Taha explains that tutoring also helps him and his fellow instructors study for those all-important exams, as well.

"We just... we wanted to do what we could, to help out. Plus, [we were] going to be home all day... to help save lives."

"I feel like I could be proud of [this]," says Taha, "like I was doing a good thing."

We are naming Diamond Bar High School juniors Taha Daud, Derek Wang and Zayn Siddique as our KNX Heroes of the Week, for helping fellow classmates during the corona virus pandemic.

KNX Heroes is brought to you by California Resources Corporation, saluting our military veterans, and all of our heroes!
