FINANCIAL AID/FAFSA

The FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, Application opened on October 1st for the 2021-2022 school year-our seniors first year in college!  We encourage all students planning on attending college next year to complete and submit the FAFSA. Regardless of whether you qualified for federal or state need-based aid in the past, we believe it is important to apply as you may be surprised by what your student may be eligible to receive in financial assistance.  If you don’t apply, you will not know if you qualify for any need-based aid.  In addition, many times colleges may use information available on the FAFSA for other forms of financial assistance.

THINGS TO DO IN PREPARATION FOR THE FAFSA:

  • Review our Financial Aid and Scholarship Information Handbook:

https://4.files.edl.io/268b/07/11/20/001718-4fa50dbf-3e54-4ce4-8362-d5744d015d5d.pdf

  • Additional Resource:  https://studentaid.gov/
  • Student and at least one parent need to create a Federal Student Aid ID=FSA ID in order to complete and submit the FAFSA.  You can do this now, you do not have to wait until October 1st.  The FSA ID is your electronic signature.  If you parent has created the FSA ID (Formerly known as the PIN) in the past then that same ID is still valid.  Parent needs to use the same FSA ID which has been used in the past for other children.

o   Student and at least one parent need to create a Federal Student Aid ID=FSA ID

  • FAFSA opens October 1st.  Priority Deadline is March 2, 2021.  It is to your benefit to complete and submit the FAFSA as soon after October 1stas possible.  This will ensure you receive information on how much or any financial assistance each college being applied to will provide to the student.  “The sooner the better” works in this situation.
  • Access the FAFSA:  www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • CASH FOR COLLEGE workshops.  These workshops are tremendous.  They are free and they assist students and parents with the FAFSA.  You will have the opportunity to learn about the Financial Aid/FAFSA process and to actually complete your FAFSA Application. We strongly encourage you to sign up for one of the Cash For College Workshops.  MT.SAC does host one of these workshops on October 17th.  The link is below and you must register in advance:   https://www.cash4college.csac.ca.gov/
  • Financial Aid Video Tutorials-Conducted by the MT.SAC Financial Aid Office. Great resources which can be used by all students.  You do not have to be considering attending MT.SAC to utilize these resources.  Video Tutorials include the following topics:

o   Financial Aid 101-If you don’t know anything about Financial Aid-you will after watching this video.  The presenter might refer to the viewers as MT.SAC students or future MT.SAC students for the purpose of the video and there is some specific references to the MT.SAC portal etc.  The bulk of the video is very good general, background information on Financial Aid and the FAFSA.

o   Completing the FAFSA-Workshop Simulation

o   Completing the CA Dream Act Application Workshop Simulation
