ANNOUNCEMENTS     

Appeals- When a student doesn’t get in to the school of their choice, the first thing many think is, “There must be a way.”  and they want to appeal. Although that is the right of a student, the UC’s strongly discourage this. This is due to the fact that every application is evaluated by two independent evaluators. If they do not agree on a course of action, a third individual evaluates the application. So, when you have received their decision at least two, sometimes three people have already evaluated your application. They don’t want people to say, “Could you please look at it one more time because I really, really, want to go to (pick a school).” If someone does appeal, there must be some kind of new and compelling information. Because most of the UC’s have waiting lists this year, they feel even more strongly about this. If openings do come up, they will draw from these lists. UCLA and Merced are the only UC’s that do not have waiting lists.

Student’s Intent to Register Most schools require the SIR and deposit by May 1^st. This is one of the most important decisions you will make. Get input from as many sources as possible.

 

We’re on the final lap Do not let down. Attendance and grades are important all the way until the last day of classes. Remember, any drop in grades could affect your college admissions, or, God forbid, your graduation.

 

 

 

RECOGNITION

Coca Cola Semifinalist­ This is one of most widely applied for nationwide scholarship with over a million students applying. Derek Chang and Jessica Chen has become semi-finalists in this competition.

 

Ramy Rashad has been awarded $2,500 as a winner of a National Achievement Scholarship. This is sponsored by the National Merit Scholar Program. Congratulations Ramy!

 

                             

                      SCHOLARSHIPS         

Diamond Bar Black Women’s Association

Applicants must be African-American with a grade point of 2.5 or higher. Must have two faculty recommendations attesting to the potential, motivation, character and scholastic ability. Based on high school activities, awards and community service. A one page essay is on your future plans is also required. One $500 scholarship will be awarded. Due May 7^th.

California Alarm Association Youth Scholarship

This scholarship is for children of active duty law enforcement and fire service personnel. They are looking for students who have excelled academically and are active in community service and extracurricular activities. $26,000 will be awarded. Deadline is April 11^th

Seiji Isomoto Scholarship

At least one parent must be Asian to apply for this scholarship. Must also have played in a varsity sport and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Amount not stated. Deadline is May 1^st.

Oil Can Harry Scholarship

Nothing is described in regards to this scholarship except that each Oil Can Harry’s will give a $1,000 scholarship to a student in the area. Apply at www.oilcanharrys.com/scholarship. Deadline is April 7th.

Hong Kong Schools alumni Scholarship

This scholarship is based on demonstrated financial need, an unweighted GPA of 3.5+, GPA, involvement in school and community services and awards and honors received. Applicants must also write a personal statement. Two $2,000 awards will be given. Deadline is June 1^st.

California Alarm Association Scholarship

The applicants parents must be actively employed as a law enforcement agency or fire department. Awards are based on academics, test scores, extracurricular activities and an essay. $16,500 in scholarships will be awarded. Deadline is April 5^th.
