COLLEGE APPLICATIONS:

As students pursuing a university after high school realize, we are in a very important time period of submitting applications.

Students:  You should take the time to proofread, (Double, Triple Check) your college applications prior to submitting them.  Look for silly mistakes you may have made, ensure your courses & grades have been self-reported accurately etc. It is much easier to catch and correct mistakes before submission than it is trying to submit corrections after submission-Many times you are NOT allowed to resubmit information so be diligent.  Remember:  there is no advantage in rushing to submit your application-there is no advantage if you submit on November 1st vs. November 20th for example.  So, work on the application, save your work, set it aside and then later double and triple check prior to submission.  On the other hand, don’t wait for the last few days prior to the due date to submit either!   Please read the information below:

Common Application:

  • Application Deadlines vary.  Students should be working on their Common App. with plans to complete their portion at least 1 week ahead of the first deadline.
  • Students may submit their portion of the Common App. as soon as they have completed it.  Students do not have to wait until their Recommenders have submitted their portion of the Common App.  Be organized and know your DUE DATES!
  • Students DO NOT have to request their academic transcripts to be sent to any school listed on their Common App.  The GLC will submit an official transcript with the GLC portion of the Common App.  The only situation a student should spend the money to request an official transcript to be sent to a Common App. school is if the student has received an email specifically requesting a separate transcript needs to be submitted.
  • Transcript:  If a transcript is needed, students will need to proceed with ordering and paying for this service via PARHMENT.  Parchment is the electronic service utilized by DBHS.  You will find this information on the DBHS Webpage under the STUDENTS menu-Look for Transcripts.  Follow the directions on this link.
  • SAT/ACT Scores:  Students should request any SAT or ACT scores to be sent, now, directly from the Test Organization to the colleges on Common Application.  If you don’t have a test score (Due to the Pandemic) then don’t worry this does not apply to you.
  • Self-Report your classes and other items exactly as they appear on your DBHS Transcript-don’t guess!  Accuracy/Honesty is critical.
  • PLEASE, PLEASE….Students utilize the Application Advice and Helpful Tips and Trouble Shooting Solutions documents for the Common Application.  This document is listed on the Class of 2021 Webpage under College and Career Video Message #4.  This should be your first “Go To” source when you are stuck on portion of your Common Application.  If after reading these tips, you still need assistance, please email your GLC and we will assist you.
    •
  • STUDENTS:  If you adjust your Due Dates on Common Application, you cannot change any Due Date to an earlier date than what you previously submitted on your Senior Profile Packet. Example:  If your earliest Due Date on your submitted Senior Profile Packet is December 1st, you cannot add a school with an earlier due date than December 1st.  If you choose to add schools with due dates later than December 1st then that is acceptable.  Any adjustment to your Earliest DUE DATE (Moving it to a LATER Due Date) MUST BE COMMUNICATED WITH YOUR GLC and other recommenders IMMEDIATELY!  Please be considerate-Communicate.

Cal State University-CSU and University of California:

  • Application Deadline is November 30th.  Students should not wait until the deadline or a day or two before the deadline.  Plan on the Friday before Thanksgiving as your deadline-November 20th and you will avoid any lagging websites because of heavy use by procrastinators.
  • Students DO NOT have to request their academic transcripts to be sent to any CSU or UC.  Students will self-report their courses and grades exactly as they are listed on the academic transcript. The only situation a student should spend the money to request an official transcript to be sent to a CSU or UC school is if the student has received an email from a CSU or UC specifically requesting a separate transcript needs to be submitted.
  • Self Report your classes and other items exactly as they appear on your DBHS Transcript-don’t guess!  Accuracy/Honesty is critical.
  • PLEASE, PLEASE….Students utilize the Application Advice and Helpful Tips and Trouble Shooting Solutions documents for both the CSU and UC.  These documents are listed on the Class of Webpage under College and Career Video Message #4.  This should be your first “Go To” source when you are stuck on portion of your CSU or UC application.  If after reading these tips, you still need assistance, please email your GLC and we will assist you.

FINANCIAL AID/FAFSA-REMINDER

The FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, Application opened on October 1st for the 2021-2022 school year-our seniors first year in college!  We encourage all students planning on attending college next year to complete and submit the FAFSA. Regardless of whether you qualified for federal or state need-based aid in the past, we believe it is important to apply as you may be surprised by what your student may be eligible to receive in financial assistance.  If you don’t apply, you will not know if you qualify for any need-based aid.  In addition, many times colleges may use information available on the FAFSA for other forms of financial assistance.
