Following Through with College Applications…
As you will read below about the college application deadlines etc., once students submit their college applications, it is not time to relax! Students must be very attentive to their emails. The email address used for college applications is going to be the main source of communication that the colleges will use to contact students. Please don’t think all is done and you just need to sit back and wait for decisions….many times colleges will send you emails confirming receipt of applications and requesting additional materials. If you are not reading emails and you miss a request from a college, it could be very detrimental to your admission’s decision. Be attentive and check your emails daily and be responsive to any requests colleges make of you. If they ask for additional information or for missing information, you should reply immediately! Keep good records of your communications with colleges.
COLLEGE APPLICATIONS:
Common Application:
- Application Deadlines Vary. Students should be working on their Common App. with plans to complete their portion at least 1 week ahead of the first deadline.
- Students may submit their portion of the Common App. as soon as they have completed it. Students do not have to wait until their Recommenders have submitted their portion of the Common App. Be organized and know your DUE DATES!
- Students DO NOT have to request their academic transcripts to be sent to any school listed on their Common App. The GLC will submit an official transcript with the GLC portion of the Common App. The only situation a student should spend the money to request an official transcript to be sent to a Common App. school is if the student has received an email specifically requesting a separate transcript needs to be submitted.
- Transcript: If a transcript is needed, students will need to proceed with ordering and paying for this service via PARCHMENT. Parchment is the electronic service utilized by DBHS. You will find this information on the DBHS Webpage under the STUDENTS menu-Look for Transcripts. Follow the directions on this link.
- SAT/ACT Scores: Students should request any SAT or ACT scores to be sent, now, directly from the Test Organization to the colleges on Common Application. If you don’t have a test score (Due to the Pandemic) then don’t worry this does not apply to you.
- Self Report your classes and other items exactly as they appear on your DBHS Transcript-don’t guess! Accuracy/Honesty is critical.
- PLEASE, PLEASE….Students utilize the Application Advice and Helpful Tips and Trouble Shooting Solutions documents for the Common Application. This document is listed on the Class of Webpage under College and Career Video Message #4. This should be your first “Go To” source when you are stuck on a portion of your Common Application. If after reading these tips, you still need assistance, please email your GLC and we will assist you.
Cal State University-CSU and University of California-UC:
- Application Deadline is November 30th. Students should not wait until the deadline or a day or two before the deadline. We hope you have submitted or will soon!
- Students DO NOT have to request their academic transcripts to be sent to any CSU or UC. Students will self-report their courses and grades exactly as they are listed on the academic transcript. The only situation a student should spend the money to request an official transcript to be sent to a CSU or UC school is if the student has received an email from a CSU or UC specifically requesting a separate transcript needs to be submitted.
- Transcript: If a transcript is needed, students will need to proceed with ordering and paying for this service via PARHMENT. Parchment is the electronic service utilized by DBHS. You will find this information on the DBHS Webpage under the STUDENTS menu-Look for Transcripts. Follow the directions on this link.

If after reading these tips, you still need assistance, please email your GLC and we will assist you.
Community Colleges:
- Community College Workshops and announcements will start in January, 2021. If you are considering attending a community college, you are not behind, the community college application process starts later in the school year…so keep your eyes and ears open in January. Mrs. Rachelle Romero, Career Center Technician for DBHS will take the lead on workshops etc.
PAST EMAILS:
Please go to the Class of 2021 Webpage to see past emails.
FINANCIAL AID/FAFSA-REMINDER
The FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, Application opened on October 1st for the 2021-2022 school year-our seniors first year in college! We encourage all students planning on attending college next year to complete and submit the FAFSA now, do not delay! Regardless of whether families qualified for federal or state need-based aid in the past, we believe it is important to apply as you may be surprised by what your student may be eligible to receive in financial assistance. If you don’t apply, you will not know if you qualify for any need-based aid. In addition, many times colleges may use information available on the FAFSA for other forms of financial assistance. Please consult our Financial Aid and Scholarship Handbook on the Class of 2021 webpage.
