MIDDLE CLASS SCHOLARSHIP VIA YOUR STUDENT’S FAFSA

Sometimes families are “stuck” in the “My student doesn’t qualify for Need-Based Financial Aid Zone” which is very common.  These students do not qualify for need-based grants such as the Pell Grant, Cal Grant or other existing UC or CSU grants.  The state government has recently created a scholarship, which may help some students who are in this situation.  The California State Legislature enacted the Middle Class Scholarship to make college more affordable for California’s middle class families. The Middle Class Scholarship reduces student fees at the California State University and University of California by up to 40 percent for middle class families.

The Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) provides undergraduate students, including students pursuing a teaching credential, with family income up to $184,000 and assets up to $184,000 a scholarship to attend University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), or California Community Colleges with a baccalaureate program. Students may receive the MCS award for up to 4 years depending on education level when awarded.

For more information regarding MCS and eligibility requirements, please visit the CSAC webpage at https://www.csac.ca.gov/middle-class-scholarship

To apply for the Middle Class Scholarship, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) before the March 2nd deadline. After you have submitted your FAFSA or CADAA, establish a WebGrants 4 Students account to monitor your state financial aid. The WebGrants 4 Students website has been updated and now offers enhanced security features and easier navigation. (https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/).

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS FOLLOW UP Part 1:

After submitting your college applications, please check your emails daily for any communications from the colleges.  In many cases, you will receive information on creating your Admissions Portal, which you will use during the admission’s process. It is the student’s responsibility to check emails, portals and to respond quickly to university emails.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS FOLLOW UP Part 2:

Communications with the colleges to which you applied is very important.  You must notify each college you applied to if either of these situations takes place:

  • If you earn a final semester 1 grade lower than a C- in a course you self-reported to the colleges, you must notify each of your colleges and inform them of this situation.
  • If you adjust your schedule for semester 2 and your self-reported courses on your application are no longer accurate, you must notify each of your colleges and inform them of this situation.

You should email each college individually and you should keep records of confirmation of receipt from each college.  You should not just send the email and forget about it, you should monitor each campus and ensure that you receive confirmation of your email from each campus!
