COLLEGE APPLICATIONS AND THOUGHTS:

We encourage our students to always work hard and do their best.  Great effort and a great work ethic will result in good results and students will feel good about the results.  We encourage students to be well-rounded and involved in activities outside the classroom as well.  Clubs, Athletics, Employment etc. help make our students interesting people and that is what colleges want.

The following criteria provide a comprehensive list of factors UC campuses may use to select their admitted class. Based on campus-specific institutional goals and needs, admissions decisions will be based on a broad variety of factors including:

  • Number of, content of and performance in academic courses beyond the minimum A-G requirements.
  • Number of and performance in UC-approved honors and Advanced Placement courses.
  • Identification by UC as being ranked in the top 9 percent of their high school class ("eligible in the local context," or ELC).
  • Quality of a student's senior-year program, as measured by the type and number of academic courses in progress or planned.
  • Quality of their academic performance relative to the educational opportunities available in their high school.
  • Outstanding performance in one or more academic subject areas.
  • Outstanding work in one or more special projects in any academic field of study.
  • Recent, marked improvement in academic performance, as demonstrated by academic GPA and the quality of coursework completed or in progress.
  • Special talents, achievements and awards in a particular field, such as visual and performing arts, communication or athletic endeavors; special skills, such as demonstrated written and oral proficiency in other languages; special interests, such as intensive study and exploration of other cultures; experiences that demonstrate unusual promise for leadership, such as significant community service or significant participation in student government; or other significant experiences or achievements that demonstrate the student's promise for contributing to the intellectual vitality of a campus.
  • Completion of special projects undertaken in the context of a student's high school curriculum or in conjunction with special school events, projects or programs.
  • Academic accomplishments in light of a student's life experiences and special circumstances.
  • Location of a student's secondary school and residence.

ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS/INFORMATION FROM PREVIOUS GLC NEWSLETTERS

UNIVERSITY INFORMATION:
INFORMATION ON TAKING THE SAT AND/OR THE ACT-CLASS OF 2025
The SAT or ACT exams may or may not be required for university admissions.
  • UC and CSU policy is that the SAT and/or ACT IS NOT a requirement for admission to their university.  The UC and CSU campuses will not even consider scores on either exam during the admissions process.
  • Private Universities in California and out-of-state colleges (private or public) will have varying policies on the SAT and/or ACT for admissions.  Many of these universities have adjusted their admission policy and they do not require the SAT/ACT for admission’s consideration.  Some of these universities may state that submitting an SAT/ACT score is optional and some others may still require the submission of an SAT and/or ACT score.
    • For these universities, our Class of 2025 students must make some early decisions.  If our students believe they may pursue admission to a university which requires the SAT/ACT or makes it optional, then taking the SAT and/or ACT will be part of their high school experience.
    • Some students may simply pursue taking the SAT and/or ACT just in case they find a university of interest which will accept or require an SAT and/or ACT score for admission’s consideration.
    • If students have particular universities in mind, they should do some research on the respective webpages for each university.  Admission policies are usually clearly stated on these webpages.
  • Preparation for the SAT or ACT:
    • The National test date for the PSAT (Practice/Preliminary SAT) also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test- is October 14, 2023.  Interested Class of 2025 students should have registered for this October 14th PSAT  during the recent GLC registration meeting/process.
    • Class of 2025 students may choose to pursue other methods of preparing for the SAT and/or ACT.
    • Most students who choose to pursue taking the SAT or ACT will take the test sometime during their 11th grade school year.
