Two Walnut Valley Unified School District students – Diamond Bar High seniors Gabriella (Gabby) Momah and Moises Roldan -- have been awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship (GMS).

The scholarship, which is awarded to about 20 students per state, provides for up to 10 years of college education at the university of the student’s choice. GMS selects 1,000 talented students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice.

Gates Millennium Scholars are provided with personal and professional development through leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

Those chosen as Gates Millennium Scholars will have their entire college education funded for 10 years.

“They are great kids and I am extremely proud of them” Diamond Bar Principal Catherine Real said.

The program is sponsored through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Grade Level Coordinator Sonja Burns explained that each winner sends in their financial aid packet and after other scholarships and grants are deducted, the Gates Millennium Scholarship will cover the rest.

Gabby will attend Stanford University in the fall and study Business and Engineering in hopes of becoming a CEO of an Engineering firm in the future. She also plans to stay involved with non-profit organizations.

“This young lady has done it all on our campus,” Burns said. “Straight A’s in academics, varsity athlete, president of organizations, and a stellar percussionist.”

Moises will attend the University of Utah for his undergrad and PhD program. He has already been accepted to the Honors Program for Pre-Med Biology with career goal of becoming a neurosurgeon.

“This scholarship could not have been better suited for a better individual.  He comes from a wonderful family and has a great head on his shoulders,” Burns said. “He will do amazing things in his future. We are all so excited.”
