Mock Trial Finishes In County's Top 8

Top

Congratulations to our DHBS Mock Trial Team for having a very competitive season that took them to the TOP 8 in Los Angeles County! Thank you to team coaches LATITIA THOMAS & MARGARET KU for their many hours of skill, their effort and their support that they gave to our students. Go Brahmas!

DETAILS SHARED BY OUR COACHES:

“We are sad to report that we lost last night in a VERY tight scoring round to a very talented Flintridge Prep.

The report is very similar to Tuesday’s because it was again the Defense performing.

We will only add a few details. Pretrial attorney, Annie Kung was so good I am almost cried. The other team named her MVP and one of the scorers told me privately at the end of the round that she nominated her as a student who went above and beyond.

It was particularly meaningful to me because Annie has struggled with the whole premise of Pretrial: arguing the cases, creating a rebuttal on the fly and general confidence with her own skill. Our pretrial attorney for the Prosecution, Chloe Zhuo, a senior, is extremely talented. She makes her performance look effortless. Chloe has sacrificed a considerable amount of time helping Annie get better and feel better about herself. For last night’s rebuttal, in the 2 minutes she had, Annie rebutted FIVE points made by the opposing counsel, she had no pauses, no umms, she never hesitated or stammered. She could not have done better if she had had hours to prepare. She spoke with complete authority on the issue. She ended with zero seconds left. In Mock Trial world that is pure magic….and the person most excited about it (likely besides me) was Chloe.

Other notable highlights: freshman Arvind Anwar, playing the expert for the Defense, was an absolute STAR, and received perfect 10’s from all scorers. Sean Yu, a trial attorney, again impeached a witness and received all 10’s from the scorers for that cross examination. And, with more verbal commendations from the judge, our bailiff, Jayden Choi was also awarded a perfect score from all scorers.

All of you who coach/lead competing groups know what happens when the team advances to elimination rounds…or what you hope happens. The team comes together for one another and suddenly care just as much for their teammates as they do for themselves. For us, it is the loss of that when the season ends, that I lament, not the actual lose.

Thank you all for the support. It is very meaningful to us!”

Sincerely,

Latitia and Margaret
