Snoop Dogg's Sons Become Brahmas

Story By Aram Tolegian, San Gabriel Valley Tribune Staff Writer

Corde and Cordell Broadus, sons of famous rap star Calvin Broadus, aka Snoop Dogg, have transferred to Diamond Bar High from Poly and are hoping to have an immediate impact in the Brahmas football program.

Corde, a senior, played some special teams this season at Poly and is seeking to gain eligibility on the Brahmas varsity team with the CIF Southern Section. He likely would play wide receiver.

Cordell, a 6-foot-1 freshman wide receiver, is expected to have a big future due to his size and hands. Both players began practicing at their respective levels this week.

"They're good, respectful kids," Diamond Bar coach Ryan Maine said. "On the outside, it's exciting to have them here, but to be honest, we want to treat these kids like they're normal high school kids. We want them to enjoy their high school football experience."

Snoop Dogg and his sons have ties to the Diamond Bar area. In 2005, Snoop Dogg, a one-time "daddy coach" in the Rowland Raiders Junior All-American football league, started his own league dubbed the Snoop Youth Football League. Snoop's new league competed for players from other local youth leagues, and angered some parents by allegedly luring kids out of the more traditional and established programs.

The "Elite Eight" faction of the Snoop Youth Football League in Southern California continues to thrive and has a team in Pomona called the Pomona Steelers. Just this year, the league opened affiliates in Nevada and Chicago.

Cordell attended South Pointe Middle School in Walnut, which is part of the Walnut Valley Unified School District, to which Diamond Bar High belongs.

Both Cordell and Corde attended Poly, where their father attended. The family reportedly owns homes in the Poly attendance area and Diamond Bar. Eligibility at the freshman level for Cordell is no issue, but Corde and Diamond Bar will have to follow CIF-SS guidelines for him to be eligible to play this season on varsity.

"There's only two ways you can be immediately varsity eligible: either through a valid residential change or through a hardship," CIF Southern Section director of information Thom Simmons said Thursday. "The only way he (Corde) is going to get eligible at Diamond Bar should they file a residential change is for the entire family to move into the Diamond Bar residential area, giving up all right, use and enjoyment of the previous residence. That's the only way any kid would gain eligibility."
