DECISION TIME
· The deadline to submit your SIR (Statement of Intent to Register) is rapidly approaching. For the UC’s, it’s May 1st, 2013. If you fail to submit your SIR on time, you have missed the boat and “your provisionary admission is cancelled.”
· Waiting lists are exactly what they sound like – a list for people who have to wait. They are certainly NOT a promise that you’ll eventually get into that school. Do not make the mistake of failing to submit a SIR to a school that accepted you because you are falsely banking on the belief that you’ll be pulled off a waiting list for another school. The best plan is to submit a SIR to the school you would go to if you were not pulled off a waiting list. You’ll have to lose your deposit if you’re later pulled off the waiting list for a school you’d prefer, but hopefully your excitement at being called up will soften the financial blow.
· Make a decision that is right for you. Remember, you’re picking more than just a name on a sweatshirt – you’re choosing where you’ll be living and learning for the next four years or so. If you haven’t done so already, take a weekend to go and visit the schools you’re considering and try to get a final feel for the school that’s best for you. While there certainly isn’t only one right choice for you, you want to make this a well thought-out decision.
SCHOLARSHIPS
· Diamond Bar Black Women’s Association – Students can win a $500 book scholarship. To be eligible, the applicant must be an African-American graduating from a local high school with at least a 2.5 GPA and plans to attend an institution of higher learning. Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Application packages including letters of recommendation must be postmarked no later than April 27,2013 to be received by May 1, 2013.
· Brahma Boosters Scholarship – This scholarship is open to any senior student of any booster who has fulfilled their booster commitment. Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Your completed application along with a copy of your academic transcript must be given to Mr. Desmond no later than Thursday, April 25, 2013, no exceptions.
· Girls’ League of DBHS Scholarship – The Girls’ League awards two $500 scholarships and five $100 scholarships. Since Girl’s League is a service-based organization, community involvement is a primary factor in deciding who receives awards. These scholarships will only go to Brahmas so apply! Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office or in Ms. Pacheco’s room (261). Application packages must be submitted to Ms. Pacheco in Room 261 by Friday, May 3, 2013.
· The Denis Paul Scholarship – This scholarship was established in 2010 in honor of DBHS’ principal from 1998-2010. The $1000 award is open to any senior who has been a student at DBHS for all four years and exemplifies the principles of community service and academic achievement. This is another one just for us – Brahmas only! Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Completed applications along with a copy of your transcript must be submitted to Mr. Desmond no later than May 1, 2013.
· Beautiful Korean Baptist Church Scholarship - The Beautiful Korean Baptist Church will give two $300 scholarships to DBHS seniors who are headed to a four-year university after graduation. Applicants need to explain their financial need, have a minimum unweighted 3.5 GPA with at least one honors or AP class taken, and a desire to give back to their community. Applicants must pick up an application from Mr. Desmond’s office and turn in this application to Mr. Desmond by Monday, May 6th at 3:00 pm.
· Industry Manufacturer’s Council Scholarship – This is a unique $500 scholarship in that it is reserved for a deserving senior who will graduate but is “not planning on attending a comprehensive four-year college.” If this is you, pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office and turn in this application to Mr. Desmond by Monday, April 22, 2013.
· Walnut Valley Educators Association Scholarship – The WVEA will be offering six $500 scholarships for WVEA Members’ children, stepchildren, and grandchildren who are graduating in May and will be pursuing higher education, or who are currently enrolled in higher education and are not a previous recipient. Applications can be found at www.wvea.info and must be postmarked no later than April 19, 2013, no exceptions.
· Walnut Valley Educational Foundation Scholarship – That’s Walnut Valley as in OUR district so you know this one isn’t going to some dude in Bakersfield – apply! They award three $1000 scholarships (Visual and Performing Arts, Industrial Technology, and Teen Citizen) to DBHS students and a fourth is available for someone with “demonstrated active participation, tutoring, or mentorship in the educational field.” You can pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office – applications must be received by MAIL by April 15,2013.
· Class of 2012 Ginger Auten and Phyllis Irving Scholarship – Man, if you thought that last scholarship was Diamond Bar-focused, how about this one? One of the people whose name is on the scholarship is walking around our campus every day! A $500 award will be given to two DBHS seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA and the best applications (unofficial transcript, two 250 word essays, four short answer questions). You can pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office – applications and scanned transcripts must be submitted to [email protected] by April 12, 2013.
· Diamond Bar Woman’s Club Scholarship – This $500 scholarship is open to graduating seniors (male or female) from Diamond Ranch High School or Diamond Bar High School who demonstrate a sincere desire to further their education. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and letters of recommendation from both school and off-campus, and they must provide an autobiography with an emphasis on community service. A personal interview might be required. Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 5, 2013.
· Diamond Bar Woman’s Club Special Needs Scholarship – This $500 scholarship has all the same application requirements as the other DB Woman’s Club scholarship listed above, but this one is specifically for students in special education. Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 5, 2013.
· India Heritage Scholarship – Nine awards ranging from $500-$2000 for graduating students with one or both parents of Asian Indian origin. For application forms, guidelines for applicants, or more information, send email to: [email protected] or call: 818-708-3885. Completed applications must be received by April 15, 2013.
· Seiji Isomoto Scholarship – This is for graduating seniors of Asian-American descent who have demonstrated excellence in academics and athletics throughout their high school career. $1000 will go to one male and one female recipient. Applicants must have at least one Asian parent, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in academic classes, and a varsity letter for a high school sport. Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Application packages must be postmarked by Saturday, May 11, 2013.
· The Chen Foundation Scholarship – The Chen Foundation “is focused on helping economically-challenged youth fulfill their dreams of obtaining a higher education.” Five $2000 renewable scholarships are available. Applicants must be planning to attend a CSU and major in math, engineering or science, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have a household income at or below “Low Income” based on the California State Low Income Level. · Youth Automobile Safety Scholarship – This is an essay competition for high school seniors who are children of full-time or retired public employees. Scholarships range from $250-$1,500 “based on merit of student essays that propose ways to reduce the accident rate among teenagers.” The deadline is May 3, 2013 and entry guidelines and the application form are available at www.cseinsurance.com/scholarship.htm.
· Mindtap Slice of Life Scholarship – “In a world full of apples, are you an orange?” If so, take your orangey self and make a 1-2 minute video in which you, I’m not kidding here, “show us how to peel an orange in an exceptional way while you tell us why you’re a unique learner.” They’re awarding a $2500 scholarship for the best video. · Matters of Life and Death Scholarship – Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree at an accredited college and must answer the following question: “Why do I need an advance directive when I turn 18?” For more information go to www.compassionandchoicesnca.org. Entries must be submitted by email no later than May 15, 2013.
· Cosmetology Scholarships – If you’re going into the field of cosmetology, see Mrs. Carson in the Career Center about a variety of possible scholarships.
