THE TRANSITION TO LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
· Embrace your new school. By the time you read this, many of you will have sent a SIR (Statement of Intent to Register) to the university you’ll be attending in the fall. You had your time to debate the decision and weigh the pros and cons of each choice, but now you’ve made the commitment to one school. Don’t waste your time thinking about the other schools to which you applied. Now is the time to embrace your school and get excited about the new experiences awaiting you. Tell your GLC and teachers where you’re going, go get a sweatshirt from your new school and wear it with pride!
· Don’t ignore emails from your future school – if they are emailing you they usually need something. Whether you are attending a 4-year university, two-year community college or trade school, make sure you continue to monitor your student account and follow through with all requests from the school. Now is the time to ensure you have taken all appropriate assessment/placement exams, submitted all Financial Aid paperwork/documents, on-campus housing reservations etc.
· East San Gabriel Regional Occupation Program is a good option for anyone A) interested in technical training for a career or B) trying to get more of their general education classes out of the way. Several of their classes transfer to the community college so if you’re having trouble getting all of your breadth requirements taken care of at Mt. SAC or Fullerton College, this might be another option. Look at www.esgvrop.org for more information.
· Take the time to be appreciative in your last days of high school. There are just a few weeks to go and you’re probably very excited about the prospect of life after high school, but believe it or not, there are some things and people you’ll miss and you don’t want to overlook them. Amidst all the frenzy of your final days on campus, take a moment to reflect on the teachers, GLC’s, school staff, and friends who have been there for you along the way. Most importantly, set some time aside to show your gratitude to your family before you start the next chapter of your life. It’s probably a good idea to have one last cookie from the school kitchen as well.
SCHOLARSHIPS
· Girls’ League of DBHS Scholarship – The Girls’ League awards two $500 scholarships and five $100 scholarships. Since Girl’s League is a service-based organization, community involvement is a primary factor in deciding who receives awards. These scholarships will only go to Brahmas so apply! Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office or in Ms. Pacheco’s room (261). Application packages must be submitted to Ms. Pacheco in Room 261 by Friday, May 3, 2013.
· The Denis Paul Scholarship – This scholarship was established in 2010 in honor of DBHS’ principal from 1998-2010. The $1000 award is open to any senior who has been a student at DBHS for all four years and exemplifies the principles of community service and academic achievement. This is another one just for us – Brahmas only! Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Completed applications along with a copy of your transcript must be submitted to Mr. Desmond no later than May 1, 2013.
· Beautiful Korean Baptist Church Scholarship - The Beautiful Korean Baptist Church will give two $300 scholarships to DBHS seniors who are headed to a four-year university after graduation. Applicants need to explain their financial need, have a minimum unweighted 3.5 GPA with at least one honors or AP class taken, and a desire to give back to their community. Applicants must pick up an application from Mr. Desmond’s office and turn in this application to Mr. Desmond by Monday, May 6th at 3:00 pm.
· Seiji Isomoto Scholarship – This is for graduating seniors of Asian-American descent who have demonstrated excellence in academics and athletics throughout their high school career. $1000 will go to one male and one female recipient. Applicants must have at least one Asian parent, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in academic classes, and a varsity letter for a high school sport. Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Application packages must be postmarked by Saturday, May 11, 2013.
· BankCard Services Scholarship – This is scholarship is intended to “recognize and reward students who have proved their excellent academic ability under inferior financial circumstances.” Applicants must have a 2.5 and applicants’ parents must be BankCard members to be eligible for one of (20) $1,500. The application can be downloaded at www.e-bankcard.com and must be received by May 31, 2013.
· Shawn Carter Scholarship – This foundation is unique in that it offers scholarships to students who “have a compelling desire to pursue higher education, in spite of many personal, socio-economic setbacks, including teen pregnancy, former incarceration, interrupted schooling, and homelessness.” They are looking for “under-served” students and one of the key questions they ask applicants is: “What are your plans to give back to the community?” Apply at http://www.shawncartersf.com/apply/ by May 31st, 2013.
· I Can Afford College Scholarship – This scholarship is just for students heading to a community college and one lucky winner will receive a $5000 reward. To enter, go to www.icanaffordcollege.com and tell them in 50 words or less how bright your future would look if you won. Apply by June 23rd, 2013.
· Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship – This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to “students that are interested in pursuing an animation career path at an accredited post-secondary school or college.” For more information, go to www.animationcareerreview.com. Application deadline is June 1st, 2013.

· Congratulations to Jimmy Cheung for winning $2500 with the Asian/Pacific Islander Foundation Scholarship!
· Congratulations to Deedee Chao for winning $2000 with a McDonald’s Scholarship!
· Congratulations to Kayla Norys for winning $500 with the Diamond Bar Women’s Club Scholarship AND another $500 with the Industry Manufacturer’s Council Scholarship!
· If you’ve won any scholarships, make sure to let Mrs. Taylor in the Guidance Office know as soon as possible to see if you will be part of the 2013 Awards Night.
