The first week of the football season is usually not the time for a statement game.

But what Diamond Bar High School did on Friday night likely opened a few eyes throughout the Valley.

Tyler Peterson passed for 162 yards and accounted for four touchdowns to lead Diamond Bar to a 48-14 victory over host Montebello.

Isaiah Thompson rushed for 72 yards and score and Antonio “Noodles” Hull returned a punt 62 yards for another to lead the Brahmas, who gained 422 yards.

Angel Hernandez threw for 102 yards and two touchdowns to lead Montebello.

“We came out like we had to prove something,” Peterson said. “We came out with a bang. We’re a hard-working team, and it showed on the scoreboard.”

Diamond Bar put it out of reach by halftime. The Brahmas scored on their first two possessions and led 41-14 after two quarters.

Tyler Peterson, who threw for 162 yards in the first half, accounted for three touchdowns. He set up he first score — a 3-yard run by Isaih Thompson — with a 60-yard pass to Hull to the 5, then tossed a 21-yard scoring pass to Kyle Peterson for a 14-0 lead at 6:26 of the first quarter.

Simon Poggi had a 30-yard interception return to the Diamond Bar 5 to set up a Hernandez 2-yard touchdown pass that made it 14-7 early in the second quarter, but the rest of the half was dominated by the Brahmas.

Diamond Bar, which had 246 yards to Montebello’s 85, took a 34-7 lead after getting scoring runs of 13 and 6 yards by Tyler Peterson and a 62-yard punt return by Hull.

DiMaggio Rico made it 41-7 with a 36-yard interception return with 1:14 left in the half.

Montebello made it 41-14 on a 5-yard pass by Hernandez.

“We talked about coming out strong,” Diamond Bar coach Marcus Hughes said. “The kids came out real strong. I’m proud of them. There are still a lot of mistakes we need to clean up, but we will.”
