Wednesday, April 15, Senior Michelle Lyu was surprised with a $40,000 scholarship from SCE. She was selected as one of 30 students to receive scholarships this year under the Edison Scholars Program, which supports students going into the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
Congratulations!
Twenty-nine other students will also be receiving $40,000 scholarships from SCE in the coming days and weeks, amounting to $1.2, according to SCE spokeswoman Susan Cox. Since 2006, the utility has distributed more than $5.3 million in scholarships to nearly 500 students.
More than 2,700 students applied this year for the SCE scholarships, which are funded by SCE shareholders and no customer utility payments, Tumbling said. The scholarships are awarded to under-served, underrepresented students and students with financial need who live or attend school within SCE’s vast service area.
Other San Gabriel Valley schools at which students have been selected to receive the SCE scholarship include Arcadia High School in Arcadia, John Muir High School in Pasadena, South Pasadena High School in Pasadena, Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs and Walnut High School in Walnut.
