Scholarship and College Information

THE TRANSITION TO LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
- Embrace your new school. By the time you read this, many of you will have sent a SIR (Statement of Intent to Register) to the university you’ll be attending in the fall. You had your time to debate the decision and weigh the pros and cons of each choice, but now you’ve made the commitment to one school. Don’t waste your time thinking about the other schools to which you applied – they’re not lucky enough to be your future school! Now is the time to embrace your school and get excited about the new experiences awaiting you. Tell your GLC and teachers and friends where you’re going, go get a sweatshirt from your new school, and wear it with pride!
- Don’t ignore emails from your future school – if they are emailing you they usually need something. Whether you are attending a 4-year university, two-year community college or trade school, make sure you continue to monitor your student account and follow through with all requests from the school. Now is the time to ensure you have taken all appropriate assessment/placement exams, submitted all Financial Aid paperwork/documents, on-campus housing reservations etc. Now is also the time to get focused so you can succeed at the next level, and a big part of that is understanding that your success is most dependent on your effort, work ethic, and sense of responsibility.
- Final transcripts need to be sent to the campus that you will attend in the fall. Go to http://dbhs.wvusd.k12.ca.us/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=167814&type=d&pREC_ID=345011 and follow the steps required to send the final transcript via Parchment. Once you have chosen your future school, you can go on the site and make the request for a transcript – be sure to request for the next grading period so the transcript includes all of your second semester grades. You can request it now, but the transcript will not be sent until at least 2-3 weeks after graduation.
- Let us know where you’re going to go! This is an exciting time, and we want to know your decision. Please go by the Guidance Office during brunch or lunch to tell Mrs. Taylor and have her take your picture! Oh, but make sure you don’t tell those GLC’s and teachers who spent hours working on your letters of recommendation, that would be just silly. That’s sarcasm. Tell us!
- East San Gabriel Regional Occupation Program is a good option for anyone A) interested in technical training for a career or B) trying to get more of their general education classes out of the way. Several of their classes transfer to the community college so if you’re having trouble getting all of your breadth requirements taken care of at Mt. SAC or Fullerton College, this might be another option. Look at esgvrop.org for more information. - Take the time to be appreciative in your last days of high school. There are just a few weeks to go and you’re probably very excited about the prospect of life after high school, but believe it or not, there are some things and people you’ll miss and you don’t want to overlook them. Amidst all the frenzy of your final days on campus, take a moment to reflect on the teachers, school staff, and friends who have been there for you along the way. Most importantly, set some time aside to show your gratitude to your family before you start the next chapter of your life. They have been there for you for the last eighteen or so years, and it’s good to acknowledge how much they’ve done for you. It’s probably a good idea to have one last cookie from the school kitchen as well.
SCHOLARSHIPS
- Council of African American Parents (CAAP) Scholarship – “Successful candidates must be African American , a graduating senior, possess a minimum GPA of 2.0, … and exemplify CAAP’s educational, social and cultural values through participation and/or achievement in related activities. Candidates must be planning to further his or her education” in any way, including university, community college, and vocational schools. ATTENTION: The deadline for his one has passed, BUT we have an extension because there was a mix-up in getting it in our bulletin. If you are interested, pick-up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office on Friday, May 1st and return it to him by lunch on Monday, May 4th, and you will be on time.
- Girls’ League of DBHS Scholarship – That’s right our very own scholarship from the Diamond Bar High School Girls’ League! The Girls’ League awards two $500 scholarships. Since Girl’s League is a service-based organization, community involvement is a primary factor in deciding who receives awards. These scholarships will only go to Brahmas so apply! Pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office or in Ms. Pacheco’s room (577). Application packages must be submitted to Ms. Pacheco in Room 577 by Friday, May 1st, 2015.
- Class of 2012 Ginger Auten and Phyllis Irving Scholarship – Here is another great scholarship that’s guaranteed to go to a Brahma. One of the people whose name is on the scholarship is walking around our campus every day! A $250 award will be given to a DBHS senior with a minimum 3.5 GPA and the best application (unofficial transcript, two 250 word essays, four short answer questions). You can pick up an application in Desmond’s office – applications and scanned transcripts must be submitted to [email protected] by May 3rd, 2015.
- Schools First Scholarship – Schools First Credit Union will award two $250 scholarships to DBHS seniors. Applicants must have at least a 3.25 GPA and complete an application. You can pick up an application in Mr. Desmond’s office. Applications must be submitted to Mr. Desmond by Wednesday, May 6th at 3:00 pm – no exceptions.
If you won a scholarship and would like to be recognized at our All School Awards Night, you must contact Mrs. Taylor in the Guidance Office by Thursday, May 7th.
