Nine Inland Valley students were among about 2,200 high seniors who were named winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.
Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2015 competition to about 4,100.
The local winners:
• Melissa C. Spangler of Rancho Cucamonga, a student at Vivian Webb School in Claremont, whose probable career field is biomedical engineering. The scholarship is with Harvey Mudd College in Claremont.
• Joseph Bae of Chino Hills, a student at Chino Hills High School, whose probable career field is biophysics. The scholarship is with the University of Southern California.
• Kali A. DeCambra of Chino Hills, a student at Diamond Bar High School, whose probable career field is business. The scholarship is with the University of Southern California.
• Andy X. Zhang of Claremont, a student at Claremont High School, whose probable career field is engineering. The scholarship is with Harvey Mudd College.
• Athena Chen of Diamond Bar, a student at Diamond Bar High School, whose probable career field is mathematics. The scholarship is with Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
• Jeffrey Ding of Diamond Bar, a student at Troy High School in Fullerton, whose probable career field is economics. The scholarship is with the University of Southern California.
• Shyam F. Hassan of Diamond Bar, a student at Diamond Bar High School, whose probable career field is medicine. The scholarship is with the University of Southern California.
• Sabrina Szu of Diamond Bar, a student at Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, whose probable career field is environmental science. The scholarship is with the University of Southern California.
• Jordan C. Wong of Diamond Bar, a student at Diamond Bar High School, whose probable career field is accounting. The scholarship is with the University of Southern California.
