2017 GLC NEWS AND NOTES ISSUE #3

GLC NEWS AND NOTES ISSUE #3

September 1, 2016

Class of 2017 Students and Parents,

Here are a few items of interest for you to review as well as dates of upcoming events-Please place these dates in your calendar.  You also recently received our first issue of the Senior Bulletin.  The Senior Bulletin will be issued every 4-6 weeks.  Please take the time to read it carefully.

1.       Financial Aid Workshop-Thursday, September 15, 2016  DBHS Theater  6:30 pm.

A local university’s Financial Aid counselor will be the presenter for this workshop.  You will learn about how to apply for Financial Aid via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Great information will be presented.  (See notes below in #5 for an additional Financial Aid Opportunity).

2.       WVUSD College Night-Monday, September 19, 2016-7:00 pm  DBHS Gymnasium

Over 50 universities and college programs will be represented at this year’s WVUSD College Night.  This is an opportunity for our seniors to visit with representatives from various universities as our students finalize their list of colleges to which they will apply.

3.       Cal State University (CSU) and University of California (UC)  Admission Applications Workshops

Wednesday, September 21, 2016.  Please arrive by 6:15 pm.  Students/Parents may choose to attend one or both of these workshops.  Each workshop will be repeated so you can attend both in the same evening.  This year’s format:

                6:15 pm-Program begins

6:25-7:25 pm:  UC Application Workshop in the DBHS Theater

6:25-7:25 pm:  CSU Application Workshop in the DBHS Golden Horseshoe (Downstairs-Building 500)

7:25-7:35 pm:  Transition to second Workshop

7:35-8:35 pm:  UC Application Workshop in the DBHS Theater

7:35-8:35 pm:  CSU Application Workshop in the DBHS Golden Horseshoe (Downstairs-Building 500)

Attendees should be prepared to take notes.  If the student has started their UC Application, bring your “in progress” application to the UC workshop.

4.       Senior Parking Lot-Seniors who wish to park their vehicle on campus in the designated senior parking lot must register their vehicle with DBHS.  Seniors should see Mrs. Elsie Garcia in our Guidance Office for registration materials or to submit registration materials.  Seniors are NOT allowed to park their vehicle on campus in the parking lot until the vehicle is registered and the proper decal/sticker is displayed on the vehicle’s windshield.  Students violating this policy will lose parking lot privileges and the situation will be handled as a disciplinary issue with their GLC.  ALL designated parking spaces in the senior parking lot are available to seniors who registered their vehicle on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students should not save parking spaces for friends.  There are NO PARKING LOTTERY designated spaces this year-ALL spaces are open to all seniors who have registered their vehicle.

5.       Financial Aid-In addition to the Financial Aid Workshop we will hold on campus on Thursday, September 15, we suggest you register to attend a CASH FOR COLLGE WORKSHOP sponsored by the California Student Aid Commission.  Check out the website below.  These are hands-on workshops to assist families in completing the FAFSA.  Very positive feedback in past years on these workshops.  These workshops are much more hands on than our Financial Aid Workshop at DBHS.  Attending both will ensure you are well prepared to complete the FAFSA for your son or daughter.  You must register online for the workshop.

6.       Limited Day Passes:

If your student ends his or her day prior to regular dismissal time of 3:00 pm then he/she is required to present to security staff their Limited Day Pass (LDP) daily upon departure from campus before 3:00 pm.  The Limited Day pass is the student’s Activity or ID card with the appropriate sticker attached.  Students should go to our Guidance Secretaries for the appropriate sticker.  Students must have the LDP/ID in their possession each day of school.   If students do not have their pass one of the following will take place:

a.        Student can choose to wait until the regular day ends.  Student may go to the Library or to the lunch tables in the main lunch area for quiet time until 3:00 pm departure.

b.       If the student needs to leave campus, he/she should report to the Guidance Office staff and let them know that they have forgotten their Limited Day Pass.  The Guidance staff member will assign an Academic Detention for a future date and the student may present this Academic Detention assignment form to the security staff at which time the student will be allowed to leave campus.

This procedure is in place to limit the number of students forgetting their LDP.  Students should not call their parents to have their parents call school to allow the student to be dismissed.  It is easiest for the student to be assigned the Academic Detention as we hope this will encourage them to not forget the LDP in the future.  We appreciate your support with this issue.
