CLASS OF 2021 GLC NEWS AND NOTES VOLUME 1 ISSUE #5

Class of 2021 Students and Parents,

 

Here are a few items of interest for your review from your DBHS Class of 2021 Grade Level Coordinators.  Some of this information has been shared with you in previous GLC News and Notes, but it is important enough to share multiple times with our students and parents.

 

1.CCLASS OF 2021 CAREER UNIT

During the week of October 16th, the Class of 2021 Grade Level Coordinators welcomed our 9th grade students to the LINC for our Career Unit.  We have posted the Career Unit Packet and other Career Unit documents, provided to each student, on our Class of 2021 Webpage at www.dbhs.org

(Go To Guidance/GLC and then Class of 2021).

 

What was covered in the Career Unit:

 

  1.  Review of the website for Collegeboard  www.collegeboard.org
    1. We encourage students to create an account on this website.
    2. Used for registering for future SAT exams.
    3. Used for exploring colleges, college majors, career interests.
    4. Used for SAT preparation via Khan Academy.
  2. Review of the website for California Colleges.  www.californiacolleges.edu
    1. We encourage students to create an account on this website.
    2. Used for exploring colleges, college majors, career interests.
    3. Students may begin inputting final grades to their account on this website after each semester.  This helps prepare them for the Cal State University application in        Fall, 2020 as the grades and courses will be able to be transferred directly to the CSU Application from their California Colleges account.
  3. ACT Website  www.act.org
    1. Students may choose to take the ACT with Writing instead of the SAT or as well as the SAT.  Universities will accept either the SAT or ACT with Writing for Admissions decisions.
  4. Review of the website for California Career Zone.
    1. Great website:  www.cacareerzone.org

b.Students took an interest profiler through this website. Once they answered a variety of questions, the website listed careers that match their interests. Students can make an account on this website as well.  Students should revisit this website and their account and take the Interest Inventory on different occasions.  Other resources provided by this website are looking for careers based on job categories and looking for jobs based on financial lifestyle.  (Talk to your student about this inventory)

  1. Great website-Students should spend some time on this website as they investigate possible career paths.

 

  1. Reviewing the “Tools” for making their 4-Year Academic Plan
    1. We provided students with the following:

iii.UC/CSU Admission Requirements + Link for Actual Course list for DBHS

  1. The 4-year plan is something we ask the students to complete for their own use.  We do not collect the 4-year plan.  We will be glad to answer questions students may have regarding their plan however.  Students in the Brahma Technology Academy program should consult with Mrs. Gallardo, Director for her input in course selection and students pursuing our IB program should consult Ms. Ku, Director for her input in planning the IB curriculum.

 

  1. Discussion on how to proceed with finding a career path for young students.
    1. One of the most difficult questions young people are asked is “What do you want to do when you grow up?”  This is a challenging question for most people to answer especially 13-14 year old students.
    2. This is the approach we encourage our students to follow as they begin to think about their future career paths. 

i.We use the ladder approach-Start at the bottom step of the ladder.

ii.Bottom Step-Step #1:  Students should think of their skill sets.  What are they good at doing and what do they enjoy doing?  We believe everyone has a skill set. Students should think of the following… Skill sets may be identified by remembering a project in school the student enjoyed doing, or a course they really enjoyed, or things they enjoy doing in their free time.  We want students to identify what they like to do, what they may be passionate about and what they feel they are good at doing.  This may be as simple as being a good writer, good speaker, good at working with your hands such as building or putting things together, being a good reader, good at math/numbers etc… 

iii.Step #2 on the ladder:  Once a student has identified skills they enjoy and may naturally be very good at…we ask the student to talk with others, research on the internet and find out what types of jobs/careers will require or allow them to utilize their identified skills in Step #1.  This will take some time and communication with others.

iv.Step #3 on the ladder:  Once a student has identified jobs/careers, which will allow them to utilize their skills, the student must now research what type of training, education is needed for these jobs.  Is it Trade School, university?

v.Step #4 on the ladder:  Find Trade Schools, Universities, which will provide them an opportunity to study towards a degree, which will allow them to pursue the identified jobs/career.

  1. This is a simplified but direct and successful approach to the challenging question, “What do you want to do when you grow up?”

 

  1. PARENTS PLEASE REVIEW WITH YOUR STUDENTS THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS/EXPECTATIONS:
    1. Cell Phone Use in Class:  Cell phones should not be on or visible during instructional time.  Please remind your student to have their phone powered “off” and not on silent or vibrate during class time.  Phones should not be out on desks and should be not visible or accessible during class time.  The exception would be during a teacher-directed exercise using cell phones for a class assignment.  Violations will result in an assignment of a Saturday Work Program, SWAP.
    2. Respecting other student’s property:  Students should not be in possession of other student’s property such as cell phones.  Students should be responsible and retain possession of their valuables including cell phones, book bags etc.
    3. Respecting your Peers:  Keeping your hands to yourself is a concept our students all learned at a very young age.  We remind students to continue to respect each other and to not violate student’s personal space etc. 
    4. Punctuality:  It is a family effort to get students to school on time.  We need our students at school and in class prior to the start of the school day.  In addition, students need to be responsible and get to each class prior to the tardy bell.  It is easy for students to start getting a little lazy with getting to class on time.  Punctuality is a life skill we like to enforce.
    5. Keeping our campus clean:  We remind our 9th graders to be respectful of our beautiful campus and to clean up their areas after the Brunch break and lunch break.

ROUTINES

Students should be into their regular school routine by now.  Consistent bedtime, wake-up time, study time and place etc.  Routines foster success!  If is very easy for students here at DBHS to become overwhelmed with their academics, extracurricular activities etc.  Please watch over your students to ensure they are eating well, managing their time, and especially getting enough sleep.  Sleep deprivation is very detrimental to your student’s success and happiness. 

 

GRADES-VIEW ON PARENT PORTAL

Please take a look at your student’s progress grades.  We encourage you to monitor your students via the Parent Portal on a regular basis.  See #5 below if you don’t have a Parent Portal account set up.

 

ACADEMIC SUPPORT/TUTORING

Please visit our Class of 2021 webpage via the DBHS Website, www.dbhs.org.  You will find under files the many Academic Support programs available for your student.  Look for Files starting with TUTORING.  An additional Tutoring program just added to our webpage is the free Math and Science Tutoring at MTSAC!

 

PARENT AND STUDENT PORTAL

All 9th graders who attended a WVUSD Middle School last school year will be able to continue using the Student and Parent Portals.  It will transfer to DBHS just before school opens.

 

If you are new to the WVUSD, you may also register for the Student and Parent Portal.  This will allow you to access student information such as attendance, grades etc.  Directions on how to register for this Student and Parent Portal may be found on the DBHS website.  Simply access www.dbhs.org and go to either the STUDENTS OR PARENTS pull-down menu and look for the Parent Portal File.  Verification Codes may be received from Mr. Randy Thomas, Technology Director, [email protected] or Mrs. Mingie Han, Registrar, [email protected]

 

DIAMOND BAR HIGH SCHOOL WEBSITE AND CLASS OF 2021 WEBPAGE

Parents and Students should access the DBHS website www.dbhs.org on a regular basis.  Students should check the website daily for announcements, opportunities and campus news.  In addition, when on the DBHS Website, students and parents should access the Class of 2021 webpage by clicking on GUIDANCE/GLC and then the Class of 2021 link.  Great information, don’t miss out!

 

STUDENT WVUSD EMAIL ADDRESS

All DBHS students are assigned a Walnut Valley USD student email address.  For example, the email will look like this:  6-digit Student ID [email protected].  Students should access this email account often.  Some students may want to have email messages sent to their Student Email forwarded to their personal email address so they do not miss important email messages.

 

REMIND TEXT MESSAGE SYSTEM

The Class of 2021 is utilizing a free Text-Message Remind system.  You may have already completed the sign-up process during your recent registration meeting with your GLC.  If you have not completed this sign-up process, PLEASE SIGN UP NOW.  Students and Parents are encouraged to sign up.

EVENING SCHOOL EVENTS AND THE NO RE-ENTRY POLICY

For evening school events such as Varsity Football games, we enforce the No-Re-entry policy.  Simply stated, students will not be allowed to leave the event and Re-Enter the event. 

“Once In-Once Out” is the practice.  We want our students to enjoy our events and leaving and returning does not allow that to happen and can become a safety issue.  Please discuss this with your students when they attend evening school activities.
