Class of 2021 Students and Parents: PARENTS-PLEASE READ AND PLEASE HAVE YOUR STUDENTS READ.
Here are a few items of interest for your review from your DBHS Class of 2021 Grade Level Coordinators. Many exciting events/tasks are upcoming for you and your Class of 2021 student.
10TH GRADE COURSE REGISTRATION HAS BEGUN
Mr. Patterson and Ms. Hoyos visited all of our 9th grade students in their English classes the week of February 26th. Students received their registration packet and participated in a presentation of the materials and procedures. We provide our students with 2-3 weeks between the first visit and the Registration Card Due Date to ensure students have enough time to make educated-course selections for their 10th grade school year, 2018-2019. 10th Grade Registration Cards are due next week, starting March 19th. Students were given their specific due date when the GLCs will return to English classes.
Parents-please take the time to discuss with your student his/her course selections and remember to sign the Registration Card. Late cards make this process very difficult for the GLCs!
We encouraged all students to read the DBHS Course Description Booklet for complete course descriptions and course prerequisites which must be met in order to take certain courses. The Course Description Booklet is an ONLINE document and can be found on the DBHS website, www.dbhs.org. Look for the Guidance/GLC link.
Sophomores and 7 Classes: Some sophomores may pursue 7 courses next year. Please remind your student to check to ensure he/she qualifies for taking 7 courses. Information was presented to all 9th graders regarding the 7-Class Policy.
Advanced Placement (AP) Science as a 10th Grader: Current 9th Graders may not pre-register for taking an AP Science course as a 10thgrader. 10th graders are not allowed to take AP Science due to space and availability. In some situations, a 10th grader may be allowed to add an AP Science course at the beginning of the 10th grade school year if the student is qualified (meets pre-requisites) and there is space available. This is the exception and should not be expected. If a current 9th grade students takes Chemistry in summer school, he/she is then able to select another course (elective) in the science place for 10th grade.

GLC REGISTRATION APPOINTMENT SIGN-UPS
Read CAREFULLY as setting up your 2018-2019 REGISTRATION appointment with your GLC is now completed ONLINE VIA YOUR STUDENTS WVUSD EMAIL ADDRESS!
All DBHS students and a parent/guardian are required to attend a registration meeting each summer in preparation for the new school year.
· Students received an email message (sent to the student’s WVUSD EMAIL ADDRESS) from Sign-up Genius on Feb 23rd.
(Note: This was sent to the student gmail account: [email protected])
· DBHS sent out a phone message and email through our system to verify you received the initial Sign-Up Genius message on February 23rd.
o VERY IMPORTANT…. Please note, if you DID NOT get an email from Sign-Up Genius, on Feb 23rd, you need to contact Mr. Thomas at [email protected] or see Jolina McCurry in the guidance office.
· On March 23rd at 4pm, you will receive an invitation from Sign-Up Genius to register to meet with your GLC. From March 23rd at 4pm through March 26th 8am, you will be able to schedule your GLC appointment time. GLC Registration appointments will be held from July 9th – August 3rd. Keep in mind, when your GLC appointment is held has no effect on the courses a student is assigned. Courses are assigned to ALL DBHS students sometime in June by our Computerized Scheduler.
o SIBLINGS!!!! If you have a younger sibling who will be attending DBHS next year, the Class of 2021 student will need to sign their young sibling up on March 26 and 27th at lunch for their GLC Registration appointment. This will be done at the SIBLING TABLE IN FRONT OF GUIDANCE OFFICE.
o NOTE: if you forget to sign up your younger sibling, your parents will have to make a separate appointment with the younger sibling’s GLC which will result in parents having to attend registration on two different days.
o If students in the Class of 2021 have an older SIBLING who will still be attending DBHS next school year, the older SIBLING will need to sign up his/her Class of 2021 SIBLING.
§ If older SIBLING IS IN THE CLASS OF 2019: Sign up younger SIBLING during lunch on Monday, March 19th and/or Tuesday, March 20th in front of the Guidance Office.
§ If older SIBLING IS IN THE CLASS OF 2020: Sign up younger SIBLING during lunch on Thursday, March 22ndand/or Friday, March 23rd in front of the Guidance Office.
Additional Information:
*If you need to change your GLC Registration appointment, you may do so online until June 30th.
*You will receive a reminder this summer from Sign-Up Genius verifying your appointment time. Reminder: Your GLC appointment is one station of multiple stations you will complete during the registration process. Everyone must start at Station 1 which requires you to arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Other stations include getting your photo ID, picking up textbooks, and meeting with USB representatives. Upon completion of the appointment process, your student will be ready to start their high school year.
OPPORTUNITY-DBHS PATHWAYS COMMUNICATIONS ACADEMY-PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS PROGRAM:
The Pathways Communication Academy is accepting freshmen applications for the 2018-2019 school year.
Pathways students are:
· Positive risk takers
· Creative thinkers
· Interactive learners
The Pathways Academy, celebrating its 20th year, is a smaller learning community that offers college prep courses and common core curriculum infused with a technical education focus. The Academy curriculum incorporates cross-curricular courses, educational field trips, guest speakers, project based learning, leadership and interpersonal skills training.
Academy courses offered during the sophomore year:
· English II (UC/CSU/NCAA)
· Biology (UC/CSU/NCAA)
· Digital Video Production (UC/CSU “F” Elective)
· Speech (Applied Arts)

CAREER FAIR ON CAMPUS-FRIDAY, MARCH 16
This Friday, March 16th the Career Center and the Pathways Academy will be hosting a Career Fair. The Career Fair is designed to give our students a comprehensive overview of possible careers and training available after graduation. Local businesses, employers, vocational and secondary training institutions, public service organizations, and military personnel have been invited. The event will take place in the upper quad and will begin at the start of second period and continue until the end of school.
NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR, TUESDAY, APRIL 24
A national college fair sponsored by NACAC, National Association for College Admission Counseling will be held at the Ontario Convention Center. Students must register online at the website below.

***Summer School***
SUMMER SCHOOL 2018 REGISTRATION IS HERE!
Please keep in mind, that a student may attend DBHS for four years and never attend summer school and still have more than enough academic credits to graduate. In most cases, summer school is not mandatory. Now that being stated, we do offer several courses for students to take here at DBHS during the summer. Comprehensive information on Summer School 2018 is on the DBHS website at www.dbhs.org. Please go to this site for the most up-to-date information. Below is a summary of the summer school offerings. Please note the dates of registration-Please read carefully.

- GLC REGISTERED THESE STUDENTS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL-REMEDIATION COURSES:
Students making up, remediating, a D or an F in English, ELD, Algebra I, Modern World History, or U.S. History should have registered for the class with their GLC. If you have not, see your GLC immediately. If you earn a D or an F, this year, in the 2ndsemester of a class that is a graduation and/or university admissions requirement, it is your responsibility to sign up for summer school on the first day – Monday, June 11th at 7:30 am in the theater. Class rosters of enrolled students will be posted on the DBHS webpage by February 21 by 8:00 pm.
ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR NON-TUITION COURSES:
- Online registration for non-tuition classes takes place at www.dbhs.org between 2/21/18 - 3/6/18, beginning at 5:00 pm. REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED
There is no advantage to applying early. Seats will be granted according to grade level, current juniors first, then by lottery if there are more applicants than seats. DBHS students, then WVUSD students have priority over students from outside the district. Class rosters of enrolled students will be posted on the DBHS webpage by March 9 by 8:00 pm.

Students signing up for TUITION COURSES (e.g. Biology, Physics, Algebra II) need to apply online at www.dedicated2learning.comor dbhs.org summer school website between March 5th and March 16th. There is no advantage to applying early, but you must apply within this time period. Class rosters of enrolled students will be posted on the DBHS webpage by March 18 by 8:00 pm.

- All summer school rosters will be posted on our school website under the Summer School Link by March 18, 2018 so please verify your summer-school enrollment. When completing your registration card, please take into account what summer school course you are taking. For example: If you are taking Modern World History this summer and you are enrolled in the course, you should not place Modern World History on your 10 Grade Registration Card. Select another course.

TEST PREPARATION
As parents, you are sometimes overwhelmed with information from TEST-PREP. companies. Keep in mind, it is an individual’s choice/preference on what to do to best prepare for Standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. Many students will self-prepare with materials from the library or purchased materials from reputable bookstores. Others may seek out Test Prep. companies or programs. We don’t want students to panic about the Standardized tests. Sometimes the best preparation is simply working hard and doing well in your courses here at the high school. Any practice tests that may be offered via DBHS or outside companies are just that, PRACTICE. The scores are not part of your student’s record and the practice tests simply serve as a review of what to expect on the SAT or ACT exam.
Traditional timeline for taking the SAT/SAT Subject Tests or the ACT (To be Used by Universities) would be during the student’s junior (11th) year. It is ok to take the exam earlier; however, by waiting until the 11th grade, students allow themselves to benefit from high school coursework.
Additional information on the SAT and ACT will be provided during our summer meeting in preparation for 10th grade.

ROUTINES
Students should be into their regular school routine by now. Consistent bedtime, wake-up time, study time and place etc. Routines foster success! It is very easy for students here at DBHS to become overwhelmed with their academics, extracurricular activities etc. Please watch over your students to ensure they are eating well, managing their time, and especially getting enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is very detrimental to your student’s success and happiness.
GRADES-VIEW ON PARENT PORTAL
Please take a look at your student’s progress grades. We encourage you to monitor your students via the Parent Portal on a regular basis. See #5 below if you don’t have a Parent Portal account set up.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT/TUTORING
Please visit our Class of 2021 webpage via the DBHS Website, www.dbhs.org. You will find under files the many Academic Support programs available for your student. Look for Files starting with TUTORING. An additional Tutoring program just added to our webpage is the free Math and Science Tutoring at MTSAC!
PARENT AND STUDENT PORTAL
All 9th graders who attended a WVUSD Middle School last school year will be able to continue using the Student and Parent Portals. It will transfer to DBHS just before school opens.
If you are new to the WVUSD, you may also register for the Student and Parent Portal. This will allow you to access student information such as attendance, grades etc. Directions on how to register for this Student and Parent Portal may be found on the DBHS website. Simply access www.dbhs.org and go to either the STUDENTS OR PARENTS pull-down menu and look for the Parent Portal File. DIAMOND BAR HIGH SCHOOL WEBSITE AND CLASS OF 2021 WEBPAGE
Parents and Students should access the DBHS website www.dbhs.org on a regular basis. Students should check the website daily for announcements, opportunities and campus news. In addition, when on the DBHS Website, students and parents should access the Class of 2021 webpage by clicking on GUIDANCE/GLC and then the Class of 2021 link. Great information, don’t miss out!
STUDENT WVUSD EMAIL ADDRESS
All DBHS students are assigned a Walnut Valley USD student email address. For example, the email will look like this: 6-digit Student ID [email protected]. Students should access this email account often. Some students may want to have email messages sent to their Student Email forwarded to their personal email address so they do not miss important email messages.
EVENING SCHOOL EVENTS AND THE NO RE-ENTRY POLICY
For evening school events such as Varsity Football games, we enforce the No-Re-entry policy. Simply stated, students will not be allowed to leave the event and Re-Enter the event.
“Once In-Once Out” is the practice. We want our students to enjoy our events and leaving and returning does not allow that to happen and can become a safety issue. Please discuss this with your students when they attend evening school activities.
