AP Environmental Science students of Diamond Bar High School have instituted a non-profit organization that seeks to utilize efficient irrigation and allow the campus to sustain more native plants in efforts of making their high school a more beautiful and water sustainable campus.
Due to the harmful effects of carbon dioxide emissions and water wastage in our environment, the students plan to plant trees and to repair broken sprinklers in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce water waste. This will reduce economic and environmental costs for their school.
In one year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the same amount of CO2 produced when you drive your car 26,000 miles
Trees absorb odors and pollutant gases and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and in bark
Fixing the sprinklers will reduce water consumption by as much as 30%
“I believe Project Cyan is going to have a wonderful effect on our community. Not only will we be able to beautify our campus and improve our school's water efficiency, but we will also educate others on easy ways to use less water. Through these methods we will all be able to work together to live sustainable, eco-friendly lives,” President Pilar Alcazar said.

“Project Cyan” is an environmental organization dedicated to utilizing efficient irrigation in order to minimize Diamond Bar High School’s water consumption and allow the campus to sustain more plant life. By planting native flora and updating the school’s irrigation system, we seek to make Diamond Bar High School a more beautiful and water-wise campus - improving our air quality and reducing hot summertime temperatures. We are dedicated to promoting sustainable lifestyles, and educating our community about environmentally sustainable solutions through social media, workshops, and rallies.
Our Achievements:
We raised enough funds to purchase 25 replacement sprinkler heads. This past Saturday, May 19th, our members we able to repair every broken sprinkler that the custodial staff had flagged for repair. This left us with around 15 spare heads for future leaks.
We also established a program through which students and staff can “donate” a tree by funding its planting. We sought to beautify Diamond Bar High School and improve its surrounding ecosystem, while simultaneously providing a way to leave behind a legacy at this school. The final price includes the cost of the tree itself, as well as the installation of a personalized stepping stone on the ground in front of the tree.
Last week, the district helped us place an order for our 10 trees, and today the 21st, I drove to the nursery to deliver the check and handpick our desired trees. Our laser cut stepping stones will also be completed today. The trees will be delivered tomorrow, Tuesday the 22nd, so they can be planted behind the 400 building by the end of the week.
We currently are not accepting any new orders, but our principal, Mr. Jones, has expressed interest and support for our tree donation program. So, we are working to keep this program available annually during registration. Our project will thus live on after the members of Project Cyan graduate and move on.
