Dear Parents & Legal Guardians:
We understand that you may have concerns regarding the Swine Flu. The Walnut Valley Unified School District is working with the Los Angeles County Office of Education and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to monitor this situation.
Center for Disease Control Information:
1. Only 50 cases have been reported in the United States.
2. Only 10 cases have been reported in California.
3. No deaths in the United States have been reported.
4. All reported cases are linked to someone who has traveled to Mexico.
5. The incubation period is 24-48 hours.
6. If you traveled to Mexico during spring break and do not have any symptoms, you
are no longer at risk for infection.
7. You cannot get Swine Flu from eating pork.
Symptoms of Swine Flu:
1. General flu symptoms
2. Temperature above 100 degrees
3. Cough and sore throat
4. Possible vomiting and diarrhea
If you become ill with fever and other symptoms of Swine Flu, call your doctor or clinic right away. If you become ill, avoid leaving your home, except to get medical care or as instructed by your doctor.
Prevention:
The Swine Flu is caused by a virus. These are things you can do to prevent infection:
1. Always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
2. Throw away used tissues in a trash can.
3. Wash your hands with soap and water often, especially after you cough, sneeze, or shake hands with someone.
4. As always, a good diet, plenty of fluids, and adequate sleep will help you stay healthy.
5. The CDC recommends the use of hand sanitizers.
