For the THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, a team from DBHS is among the national finalists in ScourceAmerica's Design Challenge.

SourceAmerica® has announced the finalist teams for its annual Design Challenge. Three college and five high school teams have been selected to participate in the signature event on April 7.

The SourceAmerica Design Challenge is a national engineering competition that showcases the STEM skills these students utilize to develop concepts and prototype assistive technologies to support people with disabilities in their workplaces.

Clare Choi, Academy Cellist, made her debut at age 12 playing the Saint Saens Cello Concerto with the Diamond Bar High School Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the 2015 Diamond Bar High School Concerto Competition, and most recently received second prize in the 2020 Diamond Bar High School Concerto Competition. She also participated in the Southwestern Youth Music Festival for several years, receiving first prize on numerous occasions. An avid chamber musician, Clare Choi has explored a multitude of works with other students through the Diamond Bar High School Performing Arts Academy, receiving coaching by Yoshika Masuda of the Rolston Quartet. Clare Choi has held the position of Principal Cellist of the Diamond Bar High School Symphony Orchestra since 2018 and Co-Principal Cellist and Principal Cellist of the 2019 and 2020 Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Symphony Orchestras, respectively. She has had the fortune of collaborating with conductors such as Sey Ahn, Sameer Patel, and Gene Moon while performing in various venues. Clare Choi is currently studying privately with Yao Zhao while completing her final year at Diamond Bar High School. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, discovering new books, and finding new boba shops to visit.

Shout out to DBHS grad CASSANDRA MARTINEZ (Class of 2011) who is the co-founder of The Searchlight Society. This news report shows her organization’s involvement in a program named IT TAKES A VILLAGE. Its goal is to provide housing support and case management for Victor Valley College students who in many cases would be considered homeless.
Martinez received her master’s degree in social work from Long Beach State. Social work runs in Martinez’s family; her mother worked in foster care.
Cassandra Martinez met co-founder Daniel Herrera when they were both Disneyland employees, while both were still in school. As cast members, they said they went out of their way to be compassionate and to make sure people had memorable experiences.
As the co-founders of the nonprofit Searchlight Society, Martinez and Herrera are spreading messages of hope and compassion to those without homes. They say it is their belief that a single action can make a difference in the community and that collective action can greatly impact the world.
The name Searchlight Society surfaced because they wanted to help form a community that illuminates and shines a light on the problems associated with experiencing homelessness, Martinez said.
“Each and every person we come into contact with deserves to have their story heard, their struggles understood, and their goals implemented,” she said.
After years of doing volunteer work in locations from Victorville to downtown Los Angeles, Searchlight Society is setting its sights on an area much closer to where they live: North Long Beach.
The couple are bringing their new Homeless Outreach Management and Engagement (HOME) unit to their neighborhood. The HOME team works out of a converted, retired Long Beach Fire Department ambulance equipped with 4G LTE and 5G capabilities and can connect individuals with partnering medical clinics to provide onsite medical consultations. The organization specializes in outreach services, case management and crisis support calls. They use a mental health approach to give individualized care to reduce the chance that people will fall back into street-level homelessness.
“Too often we come in contact with individuals who begin the first steps of getting help only to be let down due to a case manager not following through,” Herrera said. “This is absolutely detrimental and can unwind all the efforts the outreach specialists established.”
