Attendance Procedures

Attendance

At Diamond Bar High School, we strive for our students to have every opportunity to succeed and fully attain their educational goals. In doing so, it is important for students to be in school every day. To help each student reach their full potential, please see the following information regarding our attendance policies. California Education Code (EDC§48200) states, “Each person between the ages of 6 and 18 years is subject to compulsory full-time education. Each person subject to compulsory full-time education and each person subject to compulsory continuation education shall attend the public full-time day school or continuation school or classes and for the full time designated as the length of the school day by the governing board of the school district…”

Clearing Absences

Parental Responsibility – According to California Education Code section 48260.5, “… that the parent or guardian is obligated to compel the attendance of the pupil at school. That parents or guardians who fail to meet this obligation may be guilty of an infraction and subject to prosecution pursuant to Article 6 (commencing with Section 48290)….”

A parent/legal guardian listed as a primary contact can call the attendance office at 909-594-1860 to clear absence(s). Absences must be cleared within 72 hours or may result in a truancy. Absences cleared past 72 hours will be cleared in attendance and with teachers, but any consequences (i.e. detention, SWAP) will remain as scheduled.

Absences may be cleared in the following ways:
  • Visit the attendance office in person with a valid photo ID card (Name on the Photo ID card MUST match the primary contact information)
  • Call the attendance line at 909-594-1860 (Please leave a voice message with the students name, ID number, date and time of absence, and reason for absence):

    • For students last names Lio-Z dial extension 33123
  • Email from a primary email address to [email protected] (A-Lin) or [email protected] (Lio-Z)
  • Send a note to the attendance office with your student

Please email or have student drop off at the attendance office medical appointments notices (i.e. Doctor’s appointment, Dental, Ortho, Eye) to [email protected] (A-Lin) or [email protected] (Lio-Z) to clear Medical appointment absences/tardies.

Absence(s) marked in error – Students may visit the attendance office to pick up a slip to have errors in attendance cleared.

Tardies/Late Arrivals
Students arriving to school late MUST sign in at the attendance office prior to heading to class. A parent/legal guardian MUST call to clear any late arrivals.

Late arrivals MUST be cleared by 9:30am the following morning or will be considered as truant. Late arrivals cleared past 9:30am the following day will be cleared in attendance and with teachers, but any consequences (i.e. detention, SWAP) will remain as scheduled.

Students may receive consequences for excessive tardies to class, whether excused or unexcused.

Random tardy sweeps conducted by administrative staff and/or GLC’s will be held to reinforce the tardy policy. Students who are tardy may be assigned detention.

Excused Absences
Excused absences will allow the student to make up missed assignments/exams.

Unexcused Absences
Some unexcused absences may not allow the student to make up missed assignments/exams.

Students with ten (10) or more unexcused absences, a “School Attendance Review Team” (SART) meeting may be scheduled with a GLC and District Office with the student and parent/legal guardian may be asked to sign an “Attendance Contract” indicating they are aware of the consequences of further unexcused absences.
